Mmm Cinnamon!

imagesWho doesn’t love the smell and taste of cinnamon? Not to mention the warm comforting feelings associated with cinnamon especially during Autumn. If I smell or taste this spice, I immediately feel more relaxed and happy. Cinnamon changes anything and anyplace that is ordinary in to something or someplace special. Such a simple thing. But it is quite an extraordinary spice!

It is believed that a certain type of cinnamon may lower blood sugar in people who suffer from diabetes. Cinnamon may also help lower cholesterol. Some studies prove cinnamon to be an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory. While studies are mixed as to how effective cinnamon can improve a person’s health, no one can deny the value of happiness it brings.
To me, that is the best benefit of all!

So try a little in your morning coffee or cereal. Maybe light a cinnamon scented candle at work or home. However you choose to enjoy cinnamon, I’m sure that moment will be special and in that moment you will be happy.
Cheers!

Good Morning Sunshine!

If that was the first thing you heard when you woke up every morning, wouldn’t your day start with a bit more happiness and positivity? I think yes! That’s what you can do for yourself every single day. How? Eat breakfast. Even if you do not feel hungry, your body and brain need breakfast.

Why? Well, for one thing a good breakfast helps to maintain a healthy weight. Your metabolism gets going and you’ll have more energy for physical activities. And, your memory is better and that’s a great thing as we get older.
Children who eat a healthy breakfast tend to do better in school. They are less irritable and tired. They won’t be going to see the school nurse with a stomach ache or headache from lack of nutrition. If a child skips breakfast, they could have intellectual and behavioral problems from the inability to concentrate. Thought, speech and reaction time slows to a grinding halt.

So what’s good? Make a list of foods you like. Or what your child likes. Who says it has to be the typical breakfast cereal? It doesn’t. Anything with protein, whole grains, fiber and calcium will be just fine. Do some preparations the night before and wake up 10 minutes earlier to have enough time to relax and enjoy your first meal of the day. It is worth it!

2. Same time cook pasta and place in a large bowl
3. Add vegetables to pan with the meat or tofu. Add salt, pepper and marjoram to taste. Add about a 1/2 cup white whine, cover and simmer 10 to 15 minutes.

Bowl of Marbles

Summertime offers an abundance of fruit. Here’s a fun way to get your children to eat more of it, as well as trying new ones.

Step 1. Let them be involved. Children need responsibility in order to feel important and proud. They love doing things for themselves. Bring them with you to the store to choose the fruit together. Examples; honeydew, cantaloupe, watermelon, blueberries, grapes, etc. Any kind of melon and any kind of round fruit.

Step 2. All you need to do is cut the melons in half and spoon out the seeds. Your child can do the rest with your supervision.

Step 3. Have your child rinse the small fruit and pick off any stems, then place in to a large bowl.

Step 4. Give them a melon baller and let them go to work! It’s safe, easy and fun! Place melon balls in the same large bowl. Mix with hands when finished.

Step 5. Keep covered in refrigerator, on an easy to reach shelf so that they may have no trouble getting to it.

As a bonus, you might suggest to your child that he/she make a little sign that says; Made by __________. You’ll be amazed at how much fun they’ll have enjoying the fruits of their labor!

Don’t Mistake Thirst for Hunger

Glass-of-WaterAre you hungry? Or just thirsty? Proper hydration is one of the keys to staying fit and healthy. If you can avoid dehydration, you can avoid over eating. Your body needs water. When you drink enough water your appetite goes down. Good hydration makes everything work better, including your brain.

Ever wonder why you might get a headache? Ask yourself if you’ve had enough water that day. It could be due to the lack of oxygen to your brain. Also failing to drink plenty of water can shrink the grey matter, making it difficult to think. Just 8 – 10 cups water per day can improve your levels of cognitive performance by as much as 30%!

Want to be stronger? Water carries oxygen to the cells of your body including those of you muscles. Drinking sufficient water enables your muscles to work harder and longer before they feel tired, therefore building muscle.

If you want to detoxify your body, then drink, drink, drink. Insufficient hydration causes your liver to help the kidneys detoxify. With sufficient water, your kidneys won’t need the extra help. The liver will be able to metabolize stored fat more efficiently. This will help you lose weight.

Keep your youthful skin. Water keeps your skin moisturized and reduces fine lines and wrinkles. Dry skin is the result of poor hydration. Try all the lotions and creams you want, they do not get to the root of the problem. Your skin needs water.

So, the next time you feel hungry, disconnected, tired or have a headache, think about water. Are you drinking enough?

Here are some tips:

1. Try drinking at least 1 cup before each meal.

2. Drink water every time before leaving the house.

3. Always have water with you when you’re on the go.

4. Be sure to drink water before and after any type of exercise.

5. Add some flavor. A sliced cucumber or lemon or orange in a pitcher of water can be a nice change of taste.

Enjoy a glass now!
